Changes in the Video RETAIL landscape!

Quite a week for the RENTAILER video business this week.

First the announcement of Blockbuster Canada going into creditor protection, and then Videomatica, one of the oldest video rental/retail locations in Vancouver is closing their doors for good.

I commented about the possible reasons on the Vancouver Sun article today.

I think Graham and Brian had a FANTASTIC run.. I’ve know them and their business going back to the late 70’s when I was in distribution at Video One Canada (before it transformed into E1 Entertainment).  I remember living in Kits and going to their store to get just that!  The odd title that you could never get at a regular video rental store.  They always knew their market…. and catered to it.  Many tried to duplicate it.. but failed!

It’s a sad day for Vancouver; Kits and the video rental business!

However, Great Job Guys!   And thanks for severing up great entertainment product for the Vancouver community over the last 28 years!!

Everything looking Cloudy ahead!!

Amazon Cloud Drive

So what’s in your Cloud??

Amazon.com just announced their new cloud storage service today.  I was a bit caught off guard.. with very little fan fare leading up to this new service.  (Note:  U.S. only.. sorry Canada, no Amazon.ca service)

But I think I know why!  I just uploaded a digital copy of BLADE RUNNER to MY AMAZON CLOUD LOCKER!! (Note: Name of file was changed..to protect the innocent) Update (3/30/11): I have since taken the file down.  Was more curious to see how long it took to upload and if it would play.  More on this later.

Sirens blasting… search lights on!…  Man on the Run!!  or should I say.. Band on the Run!

Amazon is going to feel the wrath from the music labels I’m sure.  There are plenty of companies that have been vying for your ears (and soon eyeballs) for some time on the cloud. (eg. Spotify, MP3Tunes.)  In fact MP3TUNES.com is currently being sued by EMI (and other labels) for allowing piracy (possibly… likely…. but prove it) of music tunes on their service.  What’s the difference between MP3T and what Amazon is starting today??  Not much from what I can see.

I’ll let you know some time soon of the features I like and what my experience has been so far…  So far one has been a pain in the Ars!

Now I better get my Umbrella.. it looks like Cloudy Skies on the horizon!

Just what I need with my Batman video - Facebook TV!!
Commercials for a trip to Mexico (which I would like), a McBiscuit (which I really DON’T need), a new CT200h Lexus, (that would be nice), and of course.. I need to get a HPV shot for my Daughter. (Nice)
At least this is what I was served up based my searches.. but some how I doubt it. (Don’t think I’ve been looking up HPV info. for my daughter in the last year!!)
Ad Age talks about all the benefits to Facebook streaming movies. Certainly 1.3 Billion potential eyeballs have the studios jumping up and down like Charlie Sheen on Tiger Blood!  (Sorry Charlie.. #not-winning)
But till they work out the kinks, and the licensing issues for each and every territorial market, it could be a long tail process.  But the potential is immense!!
Bring on Tank Girl!!
